Stripped and Layered Fabrication
Research on Geometry Optimization

This research investigation details a parametric design and fabrication process inspired by Frei Otto's form-finding experiments with soap films. The study focuses on exploring minimal surface geometry through a combination of physical and digital experiments within a computational framework. By working with mesh topology, the research presents various parametric design tools and plugins in Rhinoceros/Grasshopper, highlighting how minimal surfaces can be transformed into flat strips suitable for planar fabrication using flexible materials. These tools demostrate the automated design and production of double-curved surfaces as double-layered strips oriented perpendicularly, affixed at specific connection points to ensure structural stability.
